Lucas is on our Access to Business Scheme which allows him to earn a salary as he trains, with the opportunity to eventually own the franchise business in the area he is operating in. The model hopes to attract the right people into the sector with a unique route into business ownership fully supported by our established network and head office infrastructure.
We spoke to Lucas about his role in the organisation and how the programme is helping him achieve his career aspirations.
Tell us about your background
Lucas: “I’ve always been interested in the natural environment and enjoy spending time outside. Growing up near the moors and woodlands, I developed an appreciation for nature and the work that goes into maintaining it. I took an interest in geography and natural landscapes and chose to study outdoor education and leadership at the University of Cumbria.
“The physical aspects of the course were great and I enjoyed the hands-on learning so decided to switch to a countryside worker apprenticeship at Craven College. This focused on practical skills for countryside management and environment projects and that’s where I began to see how I could turn my love of the outdoors into a career.”
What attracted you to Complete Weed Control?
Lucas: “I’m a very driven individual and want to apply myself to create a successful career doing something I am interested in. Complete Weed Control offers me an opportunity to bring that enthusiasm for the natural environment into the workplace and forge a career. Not everyone wants to move to a city or do a desk job and this opportunity allows me to be connected to the land.
“The company is well established, trusted across the industry and has a fantastic reputation in the amenity sector. I’m learning from experienced professionals across the network, and for me that far exceeds reading something in a book.”
What are the benefits of the Access to Business Programme?
Lucas: “The franchise model means every region is run by people who genuinely care about delivering the highest standards, backed by a national brand which is really attractive to me. I have always wanted to work for myself and the Access to Business Scheme allows me to use my strengths and passion to grow something for my future.
“I am earning whilst I learn, growing a business and working towards owning my own franchise. The Access to Business Scheme is a brilliant opportunity for someone who wants to eventually run their own business but doesn’t have the capital to start from scratch.”
What support do you get from the network?
Lucas: “The expertise in the network is exceptional and I am able to draw on support from neighbouring franchisees who have vast experience. From day one, I’ve been welcomed into a community of experts who are always willing to share advice and lend a hand. It genuinely feels like everyone wants me to succeed and that’s something you don’t always find in a typical job.
“If I’d tried to start out on my own, I’d be competing against these seasoned professionals, instead, I get to learn directly from them. The decades of experience in the network, the structure and the brand reputation all give me a huge advantage.
“I’ve had fantastic support from people like Alan Abel, business mentor for the Access to Business Scheme, who came out at short notice to help me with an invasive species survey. I’ve also gained knowledge from Keith Gallacher in Scotland, who shared how he was able to accelerate growth early on with the help of the wider business. It’s a great feeling to know there’s always someone nearby with the experience and insight to help.”
What support do you receive from head office?
Lucas: “Head office provides incredible support that allows me to focus on the operational side. Tony, franchise support manager, helps with scheduling and job management so everything runs smoothly, whilst Sara, financial controller, and Jackie, credit controller, handle invoicing, finance and administration.
“There’s also a sales team working to bring in business, and Josh, Business Development Manager, handles procurement and supports me with templates and systems that make everything more efficient. It’s like having a safety net and I can grow faster and more confidently because I know I’ve got the right support in place.”
What have you been working on recently?
Lucas: “I’ve moved into my new area, and whilst I build up the business locally, I’ve been helping the London team, which has been great experience. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with teams in Scotland and Wales which has given me a wider understanding of how the network operates and a chance to see different regions across the UK.”
What are your aspirations for the future?
Lucas: “My goal is to build a strong, successful franchise in the East Midlands that can support me, my family and hopefully future generations. I want a career I can shape, not just a job. In time, I’d love to take on an apprentice myself and help someone else start their journey in the same way I’ve been supported. Ultimately, I’m aiming to create something solid, sustainable and lasting, a business I can be proud of.”
