Breaking into franchise ownership has traditionally required significant capital, often putting opportunity out of reach for capable, motivated people. Complete Weed Control, a long-established application specialist, has launched its new Business Access Scheme designed to change that. The programme allows individuals to join the business as salaried team members, manage a territory with full head office support and work towards running their own franchise when the time is right. We spoke to three of the first intake, Carl, James and Lucas, to hear why they took the step and what the opportunity means to them.
Q: What attracted you to the Business Access Scheme?
Carl: “For me it’s about possibility. I’ve worked in outdoor maintenance and landscaping for most of my career, but I never thought running my own business would realistically be an option. I don’t have the capital, but I absolutely have the determination. This scheme gives people like myself a genuine opportunity. What you put in, you get out and that’s hugely motivating.”
James: “I liked the idea of joining an established brand rather than starting from scratch. Complete Weed Control already has the reputation, the systems and the experience. During induction we met the central team and saw the level of support available including marketing, sales, operations and an experienced network; all of this is invaluable, especially in the early stages. It gives you a head start and allows you to be more ambitious from day one.”
Lucas: “I felt capped out after finishing my forestry training. No matter how hard I worked, the reward was always the same, and that’s not motivating when you have ambition. This programme gives me something to build towards, with support I simply wouldn’t have on my own. We’re working for our future.”
Q: How does being part of an established franchise help compared to going it alone?
James: “You inherit the history of the brand, satisfied customers, recognised names and national contracts. When you’re talking to new prospects, that carries real weight. It’s reassuring for customers and it establishes our credentials.”
Lucas: “The reputation puts you one step ahead straight away. It pushes you to do more than you would in a traditional job because you know what you’re working towards. The customer benefits too, because we’re invested in doing things well.”
Carl: “I didn’t realise just how specialised this industry is until I joined. There’s a great deal of regulation, technical knowledge and skill involved. Being part of an organisation like Complete Weed Control means you’re properly equipped to work alongside grounds teams, local authorities and estate managers.”
Q: What support have you experienced so far?
Lucas: “The support acts as a safety net. There’s help with paperwork, procurement, sales and planning. You suddenly realise how much organisation goes into delivering the work, stock management, scheduling and compliance for example. As an employee before, I just followed instructions. Now I really appreciate the infrastructure behind it.”
James: “There’s also real value in the group dynamic. We’re all at the same stage of the journey, so if you hit a challenge, you can talk to someone who genuinely understands. That companionship and shared learning makes a big difference.”
Carl: “Having experienced people around you is huge. We have access to mentoring from long-standing experts in the industry, which gives you confidence that you’re making the right decisions.”
Q: What does the opportunity mean for you personally?
Carl: “I’m focused on growing the Kent area and, in time, expanding the services offered to our clients. The scheme opens doors not just for new people, but also for those already in the business who want to progress.”
James: “I’ve worked in agriculture and farming in the Lake District for the last couple of years, so this aligns really well with my background. The flexibility means I can balance this alongside farm work whilst building my long term future.”
Lucas: “I’ve moved from Yorkshire to manage the East Midlands area and set myself up centrally within the territory. At 21, this programme helped me rent my own place and gain real independence , something I didn’t think would be possible so soon. It’s given me freedom, responsibility and belief in myself.”
Q: What would you say to someone considering the scheme?
Carl: “If you don’t have the capital but you do have the desire, this is something really special. I haven’t seen another opportunity like it.”
James: “You’re not on your own. You’ve got a brand, a network and people who want you to succeed.”
Lucas: “It motivates you to do more because you can see a future. You’re building something that’s yours, with the backing of a business that’s been growing for decades.”
Ian Graham, managing director of Complete Weed Control added: “We want to bring the right people into the business, people with the desire and drive to grow their operation. One of the biggest barriers for people is affordability. Without this scheme, some of these individuals simply wouldn’t be joining us, or they’d be doing so under very different circumstances.
“This pilot allows us to invest in people, nurture their development and build a pipeline for the future of the network. It benefits everyone, the individuals, the wider franchise and ultimately our customers. This is a solid, resilient industry and we’re excited to see the results of this programme.”
The Business Access Scheme removes one of the biggest barriers to franchise ownership, upfront capital, whilst retaining the benefits of a proven model, established reputation and full support network. For those with ambition, energy and commitment, it offers a new route into running a region of Complete Weed Control and building a long-term future within a growing national business.
